Coogee Live, a festival celebrating family, culture, music & art
After a hugely successful launch last year, Coogee Live is back over the weekend of 9-10 March with an exciting program of free events held along the stunning Coogee coastline.
Sam Perry, winner of The Voice 2018, headlines the Jetty Sessions on the opening night, which is a coup given the gushing reviews off the back of his live tour late last year. The Voice fans will know Sam already for his incredible beatbox and looping skills, haunting harmonies and exciting performances. If you haven’t already seen him in action, prepare to be wowed!
Joining Sam on the jetty will be Perth-grown DJ Jaya, who has recently carved a name for herself in the Glasgow underground house scene. Dance the night away on the soft white sand or take it all in with a drink at the Beach Bar, for one night only!
During the day
If you’re more about day-time activities, there are so many events to choose from that your only problem will be trying to fit it all in! From live interactive mural painting, the silent cinema and a human library, to workshops where you can learn to sew, macrame and decorate your own reusable bag – this is an opportunity to get to know your local community over a few laughs and walk away with new skills and experiences. There will even be free scuba diving workshops where instructors will fit you with scuba gear and take you on an introductory dive along the Omeo Dive Trail. All you need to bring is your bathers and a towel, but make sure you book early, because this one will fill up fast.
Fun for families
Families will be glad to know that Coogee Live has plenty of spaces and activities for little people. The more extraverted kids will love the vocal percussion workshop, where they’ll get to perform at the end! A creative play area offers children the chance to build and explore in a natural environment right on the beach, and fairy tales will come to life at Mermaid Cove, where real mermaids tell stories and sing songs.
Live music and performances
Jetty Sessions isn’t your only chance to catch some great live music. Other festival favourites featured over the two days include Soukouss Internationale, Tashi Hall, Cecilia Brandolini, Mambo Chic, and Bambuseae Rhythm Section. If you love the circus, make sure you head to the Omeo Hub on Saturday night for the Circus Fire Spectacular!
Coogee Lives Here: Home Open Trail
As a Coogee local, I’m excited about the potential for Coogee Live to activate and promote our gorgeous coastline of Coogee and Port Coogee. With the expected increase in traffic in the area, it’s definitely an opportunity for people to discover what we locals have known for a while now – we’re living the dream out here! I will be hosting a Home Open Trail as a part of the Coogee Live weekend to showcase some of the beautiful homes in the area. If you are interested in joining our neighbourhood or want to find out more about how Coogee lives, stay tuned for more info on Coogee Lives Here: Home Open Trail event on Facebook (will go live in week leading up to the event).
Have your say
